Nature Walks with The New Weis Center

The Passaic County Parks & Recreation office and The New Weis Center for Education, Arts, and Recreation are partnering to bring you a series of walks through Passaic County's parks and ending with a walk through The New Weis Center's beautiful trails

Intro to Fall Birding
Where: Garret Mountain Reservation – Woodland Park, NJ
When: Saturday, September 26th 7 - 8:30 AM
Ages: 8 and above
We will take a slow walk around Barbuors Pond, listening to the dawn chorus, as we seek out migrating birds. This hike will focus on beginner bird identification, how and why birds and other creatures migrate, and general fall ecology.
 
 
Plant Communities in Our Forests
Where: Highlands Preserve – Hewitt, NJ
When: Saturday, October 10th from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. 
We will take a moderate hike through the forest around several plant communities including wetlands and fields. We will focus on some plant identification as we discuss changing forest landscapes, succession, and the impacts of invasive species. This walk will begin from the green trail to the blue trail and back.
 
 
Exploring The Highlands Region
Where: Apshawa Preserve – West Milford, NJ
When: Saturday, October 24th from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m.
This rocky moderate hike will take us through outcroppings and overlooks that define our New Jersey Highlands region. We will discuss what makes this region so unique, from the geology to the plants to the animals that live here. This hike will begin from the blue trail to the white trail, stopping by to overlook the reservoir and then head back. 
 

The Forest in the Fall
Where: The New Weis Center – 150 Snake Den Rd. Ringwood, NJ
When: Saturday, November 7th from 10 - 11:30 a.m.
To finish off our series of fall hikes, we will take an easy hike through the trails at The New Weis Center. We will discuss what happens in the forest as the weather gets colder, how plants and animals prepare for the winter, and take a stop at a stream to explore the importance of the aquatic world at this time of year.
