BioBlitz

group of adults hiking in woods
A BioBlitz is an event that focuses on finding and identify as many species as possible in a specific area over a 24-hour period.
At a BioBlitz, scientists, families, students, teachers, and other community members work together to get a snapshot of an area's biodiversity.
We're inviting the community to help us by attending one of our expert-led nature walks or events and by downloading the iNaturalist app to take pictures of the plants and animals you find around Garret Mountain Reservation and Rifle Camp Park.

Date: Friday, June 11 @ 4:00 PM - Saturday, June 12 @ 4:00 PM

  • 8:00 AM - Nature Walk with Vera @ Rifle Camp Park Pond Parking Lot

    • This will be a 1-1/2 to 2 hour nature hike along the trails at Rifle Camp Park.  We’ll be exploring the varied habitats in the park, walking on both flat and hilly terrain.  Hike will be at an easy pace, as we search for birds, wildlife, insects, plants, and any other interesting things we may find.  Binoculars helpful.  Bring camera or phone to upload pictures to iNaturalist app.

  • 8:00 AM - iNaturalist App Demonstration @ Garret Mountain Boathouse

  • 9:30 AM - Micro-Invertebreate Study by NJ Watershed Ambassador @ Garret Mountain Boathouse

    • Join your local NJ Watershed Ambassador as we search through the bugs that live in our local streams! We will look at water samples from a nearby waterbody and use field guides to identify the living creatures that we find. These aquatic bugs, called macroinvertebrates, are indicator species of water quality and we can use them to determine how healthy the stream is.
